Labour shortage triggers new express entry for immigrants to Canada

New express entry categories are on the horizon in 2025 for immigrants to Canada.
According to Canada's immigration ministry, these new federal express entry categories will make it easier for candidates with experience working in Canada to apply for permanent residence.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Marc Miller announced that the new categories are to target labour shortages and strengthen the economy.
According to a news release issued by the ministry, they will be targeting immigrants with the following: strong French language skills; experience in health care and social services, such as doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, chiropractors, carpenters, plumbers, teachers, childcare educators, and instructors for disabled people.
"Our approach ensures immigration remains a key driver of Canada’s growth, helping businesses thrive while supporting communities across the country," says Miller.
According to the ministry, immigration accounts for nearly 100% of the growth of Canada's labour force.
Administered online by the immigration ministry, Express Entry is specifically for skilled workers. According to the website, the cost for an application is $1,525. Interested applicants are able to apply and fill out a questionnaire which calculates a "Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)" to assess the eligibility of those wishing to file applications.
Eventually, once an immigrant files the application they are invited by the government to submit their biometrics before a wait period begins whilst the ministry processes the application.
